Japanese Studies at Freie Universität
I completed my Bachelor's degree in Japanese Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin in 2009. In addition to the acquisition of the Japanese language, the main emphasis was on sociological and economic considerations of modern Japan. Further, the course content was rounded out with historical and cultural studies. My final thesis dealt with the pioneering role of the Japanese automotive industry in hybrid technology.
Scholarship in Nagoya
As part of my studies, I received one of the first scholarships from Freie Universität for a semester abroad at Nanzan University in 2007. The focus there was on language classes at the Center for Japanese Studies, but I was also able to take seminars with fellow Japanese students. My stay in Nagoya was one of the most formative experiences during my time at university.
Japanese Language
Due to my studies and stays in Japan, I have gained advanced Japanese language proficiency. Currently, my reading and writing skills include more than 1000 Japanese characters, called kanji. In addition to conversations with Japanese friends, I study regularly to further develop and strengthen my language skills.
Living and Traveling in Japan
I was fortunate enough to stay with a Japanese host family for half a year during my semester abroad and also lived in Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe for several months. During my further travels, I was able to discover many of Japan's major cities, such as Tokyo, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and Sapporo. When exploring Japan, I always look forward to visiting Onsen, the Japanese hot springs.
